We are hiring a Nursing Supervisor for our growing team within our in-patient psychiatric hospital!  The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for promoting and maintaining quality patient care through effective management of the activities of the total patient care services during his/her assigned shift. In the absence of the Administrator and/or designee, the Nursing Supervisor has the authority and responsibility for administrative decisions and appropriate notification of the Administrator-on-Call.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carries out hospital/nursing policies, procedures, and standards. 
  • Visits all patient care units to ascertain the condition of patients, evaluate staffing needs and provide support to caregivers. 
  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. 
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. 
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality. 
  • Administers the effective distribution and utilization of staff employed during the respective shift. 
  • Coordinates and evaluates services rendered by and to all departments during the respective shift on an ongoing basis. 
  • Keeps the Nurse Executive, his/her representative, and/or the Administrator informed regarding circumstances or situations which have or may have serious impact. 
  • Uses good judgment in ensuring adherence to established hospital procedures and policies. 
  • Informs staff on the ensuing shift regarding the condition of patients, follow-up actions required, and any special conditions. 
  • Participates in various committees. 
  • Participates and assists in the planning and providing of in-service education programs within the hospital or other meetings, seminars, or institutes conducted outside the hospital. 
  • Participates in patient care meetings and in-service education functions. 
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  •  Evaluates and document the performance of employees as indicated and communicate this information to the Patient Care Manager. 
  • Assumes the duties as outlined in the Emergency Management Manual. 
  • Follows Pharmacy protocols for obtaining drugs when the Pharmacist is unavailable. 
  • Evaluates the accuracy of staffing systems.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control. 
  • Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directives to staff. 
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. 
  • Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.

Key Experience and Education Needed:

  • Master’s level or bachelor’s level Registered Nurse with working knowledge and experience in nursing principles and theories in the inpatient psychiatric hospital field. Experience managing regulatory and accrediting organizations with reporting and survey management.
  • Knowledgeable about regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, and local regulations and accrediting organization standards.
  • Prior experience in the regulatory and accreditation preparation and survey process associated with nursing care and patient safety preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years in a behavioral health inpatient/outpatient environment preferred.

Other Qualifications to be Considered:

  • Ongoing education in behavioral health preferred. 
  • Proficient in information technology 
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA compliance and regulatory and accreditation programs.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to navigate various departments of the organization’s physical premises.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to read detailed health records 
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to operate computer and other equipment in the office
  • Must have sufficient mobility to move around the office and the community
